Technical Help for Lemming Games

This section shall provide help on how to set up the computer to get the lemming games to run properly. The main focus here will be PC's with Windows 95 as this is the system I am using at home (besides Linux :-) and Windows NT). If you need information for systems besides PC and Amiga which is not presented here, I won't be able to help in most of the cases even if you mail me. Asking in the Lemmings Newsgroup or a specific computer related group will give much better results.

For a PC with Windows 95

Lemmings 1, Oh No! More Lemmings, XMas + other demos in the original style

These don't seem to work well from within Windows 95 - the icons at the bottom are not shown.

There are several possibilities to run these, each of them requires to quit Windows:

Set up a system configuration (config.sys/autoexec.bat) with a menu. This is what I use at home. I have written a small tutorial on how to do this.
Set up a Win 95 icon for the game in exclusive DOS mode. I haven't tried this, but I will do so.
Boot the previous DOS version by pressing the F8 function key. I have no idea how this works, but I will try to get information for this, too
Use a customized boot disk. (There are better ways...)
Quit Windows 95 and return into MS DOS mode. From what I heard, this is not the best way... I am not sure if I will put information on that here.

Lemmings 2 - The Tribes, Lemmings 3 - All New World of Lemmings (The Chronicles), 3D Lemmings

All of them can be played in a Windows 95 DOSBox.

Soundcard autoconfiguration in 3D Lemmings didn't work with Soundblaster 16. Someone told me that setting I/O to 0x220, IRQ to 5 and DMA to 1/5 solved the problem. I experienced this problem too. I have no idea if Lemmings 2 and 3 fail here too - if you don't get sound which a Soundblaster I would recommend to give it a try.

All of these games need an amount of EMS, so you either have to set up enough EMS in your config.sys or - the solution I prefer - delete all unnecessary stuff from this file and set the Memory attributes for the DOS Box to Auto. You might also want to set up a configuration menu. See an example on how to do this.

Macintosh

If you have a problem with the sound on a PowerMac try this LemmingsUpdater1.2.2 (sit, 28k). It has been posted in the alt.lemmings newsgroup and should help for Lemmings version 1.4.2
